They're restarting that tradition this year; here's what I sent them - not an all-time favorites list, but a few titles I've liked recently. Share your suggestions for the summer in the comments! -Martha

The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell - I have a feeling a lot of people have read this already, but I didn't think it looked like my kind of thing until my book group decided to read it, and it turned out to be totally my thing. A Jesuit-organized mission makes first contact with an alien society; this was marketed as science fiction for people who don't read science fiction, but definitely very much science fiction (think Ursula K. le Guin). A heavy read; I loved the tone.

The Spellman Files and sequels, by Lisa Lutz - if my family decided to jointly write a detective series, it would look like this. A family of private eyes has wacky shenanigans, narrated by the slacker 27-year-old daughter, with footnotes and pop culture references!

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz - a nerdy Dominican, a family curse - people I've talked to either loved or hated this one; the voices and the plotline completely grabbed me, but the language and cultural references are definitely not for everyone.

What the Dead Know, by Laura Lippman - a woman claims to be one of two sisters who disappeared from a shopping mall 30 years earlier. Switches between the investigation of her story, and earlier flashbacks. More psychological suspense and exploration of character, rather than an action-packed page-turner, but compelling enough to read in a couple of sittings.

The Inn at Lake Devine, by Elinor Lipman - opens with 12-year-old Natalie Marx's family receiving a letter from an inn in Vermont, in response to an inquiry about summer openings, stating that Gentile guests feel most comfortable there; the inn goes on to play a large part in Natalie's life over the years. A funny, sweet family novel, with romance and cooking.

Consumer Reports online

Now available for Gleason Library cardholders: consumerreports.org! Each kit includes 15 copies of one title, a discussion guide to assist book club leaders, and when available, a large print copy of the same title, and a DVD or video relating to the book. These kits can be reserved up to three years in advance in order to facilitate long-term planning.

Looking for discussion questions and guides for your next title? Try Reading Group Guides and Book Browse, or go straight to the author or publisher's website - most publishers have discussion questions available for their recent titles.

Picking your next book? Find out what's coming soon at Early Word (targeted at booksellers and librarians, but great for finding out what's getting the latest buzz) and Overbooked (lists of books by topic and the latest releases).

Or check out books at the library like Nancy Pearl's Book Lust or Read it and eat : a month-by-month guide to scintillating book club selections and mouthwatering menus.

The Gleason Public Library (GPL) maintains an information file on the various book discussion groups that abound in Carlisle. This file contains information on each group: their book selections for the current year, their meeting dates and times, whether or not they are accepting new members and the names of contact people. This information is used by the library staff for obtaining books through interlibrary loan, by book group members as a convenient reminder, and by other book groups and patrons as a good source of reading selections and a means of avoiding scheduling conflicts.

To maintain this valuable resource, the library staff is collecting information from each of Carlisle’s book groups. Contact Martha Patten (mpatten@mvlc.org) or Kay Edelberg (kedelberg@mvlc.org) or call the library (1-978-369-4898) to update your group’s information.

Community Read: Vote Now

Vote and let your choice be read! With surprising and practical insight, Tancer demonstrates how the Internet is changing the way we absorb information and how understanding that change can be used to our advantage in business and in life. Click analyzes the new generation of consumerism in a way no other book has before, showing how we use the Internet, and how those trends provide a wealth of market research nearly as vast as the Internet itself. Understanding how we change is integral to our success. After all, we are what we click.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ar0oEsMhsWY/SNAJKaP3gBI/AAAAAAAAABE/sGK0jvyGYBw/s200/Wroblewski.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246703640335843346" />The Story of Edgar Sawtelle: A Novel by David Wroblewski

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. Here's just a small sample of what's available - we keep finding more as we browse. Most of the contents can be viewed/read/listened to online or downloaded to your hard drive. Everything's free, no registration or special software required.

The Wayback Machine archives versions of web pages that are no longer available.

The Moving Images section includes old newsreels and educational films, and newer footage uploaded by its makers, from experimental films to amateur camcorder footage of the 2004 tsunami's devastation in action.

The text collection includes classic and out-of-copyright publications and historical documents, scanned page-by-page, including illustrations. Check out illustrated French fairy tales or some eighteenth-century medical advice.

I've spent the most time at the Live Music Archive, with almost 40,000 concert recordings by over 2400 bands, in mp3 and other digital formats. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of jam bands like the Grateful Dead, but there are also newer acts like the Decemberists;
